12/24/2023 0 Comments Download wine for mac big surThe game itself runs great in Crossover under Big Sur. Crossover is basically the "pro" version of WINE and includes a 32-bit->64-bit compatibility layer so the 32-bit LOTRO launcher app will work. Obviously, this solution will not work if your Mac is a model which is so new it can't boot into Mojave.Ģ- The solution which costs a bit of money (free to try for a couple of weeks though) is to get Crossover v20 or later from Codeweavers, install that on your Catalina/Big Sur volume, then install the standard Windows version of LOTRO into Crossover. You will need to reboot to Mojave when you want to play LOTRO – this is not a big deal to do, I keep a Mojave volume because I have a number of old 32-bit applications which I still use sometimes. ![]() The "Mac" client, which is actually the Windows client packaged for us by SSG with WINE, will run very nicely there. Even though there is a 64-bit version of the actual game client, the LOTRO launcher application – which is required in order to properly run the client executable – is 32-bit and so it can't run on post-Mojave versions of MacOS.ġ- The free solution is to create a new APFS volume on your drive, install Mojave there, boot from Mojave, then install the game on that volume. Apple does not include support for 32-bit applications in any version of MacOS after Mojave 10.14. My second and much-more-likely-to-be-correct guess is that you are using MacOS Catalina 10.15 or MacOS Big Sur 11. Check that first I doubt that's the problem but it is possible. My first guess, unlikely but possible, is that you are not clicking the lotroclient application that was installed into your /Applications folder but are instead clicking on the installer application which possibly has the same name. It only installs every time I press the Lotroclient. If you are using Crossover, the location of the "bottle" in (2) above is different but if that's the case you can just delete the bottle directly from the Crossover application.ĭownloaded the Mac client but game never starts up. This assumes you are using the Windows client packaged with WINE. You might have put this somewhere else but most people put applications in /Applications. ![]() Don't delete this, move it to a safe place so you can put it back after the game has been reinstalled and you have confirmed it is working as it should.Ģ- ~/Library/Application Support/ is the WINE and primary LOTRO installation.ģ- /Applications/lotroclient is where the stub application can be found, this thing just starts up WINE and tells WINE to run LOTRO. If you choose to do so, there are three locations:ġ- As noted above, your preferences and plugins are stored in ~/Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online. You should not have to delete the current installation of the game before performing the reinstallation. ![]() That should get you back up and running with all your preferences and settings exactly as they were before you experienced this problem. Once you have reinstalled the game and confirmed that it is working, you can quit out of the game and then put your old The Lord of the Rings Online folder back into ~/Documents, overwriting the one the game created when you first launched it after reinstallation. That folder, The Lord of the Rings Online, contains all your keybinds, UI layouts, and settings as well as any plugins you might be using. Therefore, absent someone else coming in and telling you something truly genius that I can't think of, you will need to reinstall the game.īefore you reinstall the game, go to your ~/Documents folder and make a copy of the enclosed The Lord of the Rings Online folder to a safe location (the Desktop is fine, an external drive is better). Since you can't get to the LOTRO launcher app (let alone the LOTRO client) you can't choose to have the game attempt to repair itself. Something happened during the update process which corrupted your installation of LOTRO.
